WHAT ARE COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES?

Most complementary or natural approaches to healing have similar principles.
The body has a natural ability to heal itself and remain stable (known as homoeostasis)

The human being is not simply a physical machine like a car, but a subtle and complex blend of body, mind and emotions and all or any of these factors may cause or contribute to problems of health.
The word holistic comes from the Greek work “holus” which mean “whole”.

Holistic therapies therefore, aim to treat the whole person not just the physical symptoms that are apparent.
Treating the root cause of the problem is more important than merely treating the symptoms. Treatment of symptoms alone may simply cover up the real underlying problem.

Each person is an individual and needs to be treated as such. Textbook solutions do not take this into consideration.

Environmental and social conditions are just as important as an individual’s physical and psychological makeup and may have just as big an impact on health.

Healing is quicker and more effective if the person takes central responsibility for his or her own health and has an active involvement in the healing process.

A good therapist however, needs to recognise when someone needs to “let go” and place themselves in the hands of another.

Good health is a state of emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical “balance”.
Ill health is the result of “imbalance” or “dis-ease”.
There is a natural healing force, which flows through our bodies, and if this becomes blocked in some way, disease may follow.

The best approach is one that is gentle and does no harm.
